CREEDE- During the regular monthly meeting of the Creede Board of Education, board members took timeout of the agenda to consider a new course for students at the Creede School and will be researching opportunities in coming weeks. Several schools throughout the Valley have begun to adopt aviation courses into their curriculum and Creede is the next school on the docket.

There is a shortage of interest in becoming a pilot and a lot of organizations like public schools throughout the country are beginning to recruit students that may be interested in making aviation a part of their career. In the San Luis Valley, there are two schools that have taken steps to further grow student interest in aviation, Sargent School District and the Upper Rio Grande School District.

In a report given by Creede School Principal John Goss, he stated that there was a growing interest in aviation in the school and that he would like to see some kind of course take place. The school is currently looking for an instructor that would be capable of teaching an hourlong course and is also considering which classroom to use for the course.

School board members opted to contact Jay Sarason, who used to be the Ken Rominger Airport Director out of Del Norte, but who is now teaching an aviation course to students in Sargent School. Sarason started the program in the spring of 2019 and interest for the class took off. It was at that time that Sarason stepped down as director of the airport to teach the course fulltime.

The Sargent School District class is based on a four-year curriculum that once completed, should put a student in a position to begin flight training or, with the right support, obtain their full pilot’s license. First-year students in the Freshman grade will begin the class with aviation fundamentals, learn about safety and decision-making skills as well as a complete run down of planes and basic mechanics. The program continues through senior year, when, if all goes well, students may actually begin training in actual flight hours needed to get a license.

The Upper Rio Grande School District also has a type of course in place that uses virtual reality as a means to experience flights through a flight simulator. The simulator is a three-screen computer with a state-of-the-art flight program that is extremely accurate in accordance with each type of aircraft chosen. Students can sit in the “captain’s” chair with real life controls that when used, activate on screen. The simulator can turn 360 degrees so students who are using it can learn to look at their surroundings, check equipment such as rudders, flaps, propellers and other components of basic planes or even spacecrafts.

Creede Board of Education members agreed that there was opportunity in creating the course and hoped to have something in place in coming weeks. One of the current board members, Casey Adelman is a flight instructor and is considering helping with the program.
