When No. 1 Clemson takes on No. 4 Notre Dame on Saturday night, it won't quite be the matchup we all hoped it would be when it was put on the schedule. Yes, both teams are undefeated and ranked in the top four nationally. That means it's a huge game, but it will lack something.
Clemson quarterback and former Heisman Trophy favorite Trevor Lawrence will miss his second consecutive game after testing positive for COVID-19. Clemson was able to get past Boston College last week after a slow start, but can it beat a top-four team on the road with its backup QB? Maybe! It's not like that backup QB is a walk-on who went unnoticed in high school. D.J. Uiagalelei was the top-ranked QB in his recruiting class and had every bit the pedigree that Lawrence did coming out of high school.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame is approaching this game the same way no matter who is behind center. The Fighting Irish want revenge for their 30-3 loss to Clemson in the Cotton Bowl during the 2019 College Football Playoff. Notre Dame also wants to assert its status as a legitimate contender for a College Football Playoff berth again this season, as well as an ACC conference title. So it might not look exactly like we thought it would, but this will still be one of the biggest games of the 2020 regular season with ramifications that will be felt for the rest of the season.
