BRIDGEPORT — The state’s largest school district that is holding classes in person will switch to full remote as of Nov. 23.

The announcement came Thursday from Schools Superintendent Michael Testani hours after he acknowledged his inclination was to keep schools open for in person learning.

Testani said after working tirelessly to maintain in-person teaching and learning, the extremely difficult decision was made to transition to full remote learning.

He did not give an end date to the closure, saying only the decision would be re-evaluated in three weeks.

The decision comes as COVID-19 cases in the region and state have been mounting. Bridgeport is now in a red zone. In city schools, as of Thursday, there were 119 positive COVID-19 cases reported across the district, netting 89 students and 30 staff members at 34 schools.

Since the start of the school year in the fall, roughly half of some 19,500 students have been attending school in person.

Testani said the district is ready for a return to full distance learning from a technological standpoint.

After hiccups in the first several weeks of the school year when remote learning was hampered by a disconnect between the district’s online platforms, Testani said all student have been provided with a device to engage in remote instruction.

The plan is for all teachers to still report daily to school to provide remote instruction to their classes.

Training on synchronous learning, he said, has also been provided to teachers and support staff.

“The district is in a much better position than we were in September,” Testani said. “The focus of our work needs to shift from daily operations to remote teaching and learning and the delivery of instruction to all our students.”

While in-person learning will stop, food service will not. All schools will provide grab and go meal service daily.

During the closure period, school buildings will be closed to the public and all extracurricular activities will be virtual. All winter athletics will be postponed. All special education planning and placement meetings will also be held virtually.

Parents of students who need to pick up materials from a school must contact the building principal to work out a mutually agreeable time.
