Bayern Munich were initially pushed to the limit in Austria on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League group stage, but the reigning champs prevailed 6-2 over Red Bull Salzburg after a late flurry of goals. The Bavarians went down just four minutes in thanks to a goal from Mergim Berisha, but some good fortune helped the side take the lead before finishing off the underdogs with four late goals.

Jerome Boateng and Leroy Sane scored in the span of five minutes before Robert Lewandowski got his second of the game to extend Bayern's winning streak in the competition to 14 games. Lucas Hernandez scored the sixth in added time.

The win gives Bayern a five-point lead atop Group A, while Salzburg are still fully in contention for second and third place, though they now sit in the cellar of the group with one draw and three losses.

Here are three takeaways from the match:

Bayern were on the ropes for a good bit

Salzburg played Bayern tough, pressed well and brought energy, but it wasn't only that. On the ball Salzburg were composed, broke down the Bayern defense a few times and really went toe to toe with the world's best team. It was to the point where a draw felt fair, but when it is Bayern, a goal can come at any moment and it did. It was actually several moments.

Just like last week against Lokomotiv Moscow, Bayern didn't have their best game but came alive when it mattered most and got the result. The superior strength and stamina of the German side was evident, and when Salzburg were slowing down, Bayern managed to pick it up and deliver a ruthless attack that will make Barcelona fans cringe.

Four goals after the 78th minute resulted in an inflated scoreline, and while Bayern weren't dominant for the majority of the game, they were on a different level in the last 15 minutes.

Marsch risks it and leaves back vulnerable

Jesse Marsch, Salzburg's American coach, isn't one to show weakness and admit Bayern or any other team is better than his. It's to the point where conversations I've had with him truly make me believe that he thinks his team can beat anybody on any given day and makes me want to run through a wall. And his team truly believes it, and that is why they have confidence in coming back even when down. But when you push so many people forward late to get an equalizer, it's asking for trouble against a Bayern team where you need a bit of luck.

The going forward after the 80th minute in numbers and leaving the backline short did this team in. That's not to say that Salzburg would have gotten a draw had they kept their same shape, but the possession was there to potentially build on the chances they created. In all, Salzburg had 18 shots and also the same amount as Bayern on frame -- 10.

You've got to risk it at times, but against a Bayern team like this, it just feels like playing a bit more cautiously and patiently towards the end would have given them a better chance of something.

Bayern all but through, but don't count Salzburg out

You can pen Bayern into the round of 16 now, though they haven't clinched a spot just yet. But don't count Salzburg out, especially after Atletico's draw with Lokomotiv Moscow. Salzburg's goal differential is hurting after this one, and while they probably won't get anything at Bayern next time out, the match at Lokomotiv on Dec. 1 could be the one that keeps them alive. Salzburg have been competitive and are just three points out of second place. They dream of making the round of 16 for the first time ever, and they have the quality and confidence to do it. While we may be thinking they don't have much of a chance at Bayern to get something, don't tell them that, because they think they can and believe they will.
