A federal judge has dismissed a civil lawsuit brought by the Bermuda government accusing Lahey Hospital and Medical Center of paying bribes to gain health care business on the island.
US District Court Judge Indira Talwani rejected claims by island officials that Lahey bribed Bermuda physician, Dr. Ewart Brown, while he was premier of the British territory from 2006 to 2010. The lawsuit alleged that Lahey and Brown ran and profited from a corrupt scheme that involved money laundering and mail fraud.
Lahey’s ties to Bermuda go back more than two decades, and include sending dozens specialists to the island and bringing some patients back to Massachusetts for surgery and other complex care. The hospital has maintained that its business practices in Bermuda are fully compliant with the law.
