I Have Three Closets Full of Clothes, but I Can't Stop Wearing the Divisive Shorts Celebs Are Returning To - PEOPLE

Some people like to scoop up the buzziest makeup products, while others love to collect old records or sports memorabilia. But me? It’s clothing I can’t stop buying.

I have three jam-packed closets, two full dressers, a clothing rack on wheels, multiple under-the-bed storage bins, in-closet storage containers, and so many pairs of shoes, I’ve lost count. But even with my mini department store, there’s one style I keep reaching for: Bermuda shorts.

And before you completely nix the polarizing pants altogether, know that I’m not all by my lonesome — plenty of celebrities are fans, too. Mindy Kaling recently shared an Instagram photo highlighting her first time wearing Bermuda shorts. She went for jorts, similar to Kourtney Kardashian, while Jennifer Lawrence and Meghan Markle typically style more refined pairs.

I spend time in Illinois and Arizona in the spring and summer, which are humid and dry, respectively, so I need bottoms that work for both climates. I’m also a fairly modest dresser and don’t like short shorts or low-rise styles. I don’t want to sweat profusely every time I leave the house, so finding spring and summer styles is usually hard.

But Bermuda shorts are it for me. They give me that breeze that I need yet I don’t feel like my bottom or legs are too exposed to the sun. And in my opinion, they look ritzy and mature.

Like Kaling, I also own Bermuda jorts. I have them in two colors, and my dark wash pair reminds me of these from Lee, which are available in sizes 4 to 18. They’re a straight-leg fit, so they don’t taper in and make your proportions look awkward, while the looser leg holes also keep up the breeze for more airflow. Plus, the cut isn’t too roomy, so you’ll still have some shape. Get them while they’re on sale for as little as $21.

As for how to wear them, I’ve worn mine with just about everything. If at the lake or beach, I’ll pair the shorts with a lightweight blouse and some comfy sandals. If it’s dinner I’m heading to, I’ll trade my shoes for kitten heels and add some bold jewelry to top it off.

I'll pick out a more high-style pair of Bermuda shorts for the days I want to dress like I’m walking around the city of Paris (and not the suburbs). The Millie shorts from The Drop are pleated, a nice change-up from denim. The waistband also has some elastic in the back for comfortability, and the fabric is crafted from 100 percent linen, so it should fair on the cool side. And with a matching button-up, it’d be similar to the time Meghan Markle coordinated her blazer with Bermuda shorts

The Gap 365 Mid-Rise Cargo Bermuda Shorts are another way to try the trend. The basketball-meets-streetwear shorts have big cargo pockets for your phone, sunscreen, and spring essentials, and they look like they’d land just shy of the knee. I’d suggest getting them in black – I wear mine all the time — but the olive green hue definitely channels Oprah

Bermuda shorts aren’t all that scary, I promise. Keep scrolling to shop more options at Amazon, Nordstrom, and more.
