Getting away on a Bermuda-ful vacation

Bike through the backroads, try a famous fish sandwich at Woody's, and explore history at the National Museum of Bermuda.

GETTING FROM END TO END CAN BE A CHALLENGE ON FOUR WHEELS OR TWO FERRIES OFFER A SCENIC WAY TO TRAVEL, BUT ON THIS BERMUDA, FULL MORNING, AS THEY SAY HERE, WE OPT FOR THE PEDAL BIKES AND BACK ROADS. THE ROAD, AN ABANDONED RAIL BED. OUR GUIDE, TREVOR RAWSON, IS A PORTION OF BERMUDA THAT YOU DON’T REALLY GET TO SEE VIA TAXI. SO WHAT YOU’RE SEEING IS A QUIET SOLITUDE OF BERMUDA. CARS WERE BANNED IN BERMUDA IN THE EARLY 1900S, SO THE OLD RATTLE AND SHAKE TRAIN AS IT WAS CALLED, WAS THE ONLY RAPID TRANSIT. ITS LAST RUN WAS IN 1948. THE AMERICANS CAME DOWN HERE, PAVED A REGULAR ROAD, SO THEY ALLOWED FOR US TO HAVE OUR OWN BIKE PATH, PEDESTRIAN PATH FOR EVERYBODY TO USE. PRIME STOPS INCLUDE GIBBS HILL LIGHTHOUSE, ONE OF THE OLDEST CAST IRON LIGHTS IN THE WORLD, AND FORT SCAR, BUILT TO PROTECT BERMUDA FROM US AMERICANS. THEY STARTED BUILDING IT IN THE 1800S. STRANGE ENOUGH, THEY DIDN’T REALLY HAVE MUCH TO DO BECAUSE THEY WERE NEVER ATTACKED. IT WAS ONE OF OUR MANY FORTS ON THE ISLAND, AND WHAT THEY ENDED UP DOING WITH ALL THE SOLDIERS HERE WAS DIGGING TUNNELS, AND THIS WAS LITERALLY YOUR BACKYARD GROWING UP. IT’S A PEDAL BIKE HERE MYSELF AS A KID, OFF SEASON IS WHEN YOU SEE THE REAL BERMUDA, SAYS RAWSON. YOU GET TO REALLY EXPERIENCE JUST WHAT WE DO EVERY DAY. YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE YOU ARE VISITING. YOU ACTUALLY FEEL LIKE YOU’RE HOME. HERE, MARK TWAIN’S FAVORITE PHRASE ABOUT BERMUDA WAS YOU CAN DIE AND GO TO HEAVEN. I’D RATHER STAY IN BERMUDA. DID SOMEONE SAY LUNCH? WHAT A CLAM ROLL IS TO THE NORTH SHORE AND A LOBSTER ROLL TO MAINE IS THE FISH SANDWICH IN BERMUDA AND IN BERMUDA, WOODY’S IS THE LOCAL LANDMARK FOR IT. BETTER YET, OWNER RONALD TANKARD IS ALSO A FISHERMAN. I TRY TO KEEP AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE A LOCAL CUT OF FISH. WE HAVE A WAHOO, WHICH I HAVE OTHER FISHERMEN THAT CATCH FOR ME. ALSO, I CATCH SNAPPER ON A REGULAR BASIS, BUT OVERDISPERSION IS IN OUR SEASONING. YOUR SEASONING A SECRET? DEFINITELY. SO IT’S PASSED ON. YOU’RE NOT TELLING ME NO, I CAN’T TELL YOU THAT. MY WIFE WOULD WOULD WOULD BE VERY UPSET ABOUT THAT. THE RIGHT SEASONING, GOOD FISH AND RAISIN BREAD. THE RAISIN IS VERY POPULAR BECAUSE YOU GET THAT LITTLE SWEET ADDITION TO THE FISH WHEN YOU CRUNCH INTO A RAISIN. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE PUT A LOT OF LOVE INTO OUR FOOD, WHICH YOU CAN SEE ON THE BACK OF MY SHIRT ONCE. THE LOVE IS IN THE FOOD AND THE SEASON IS CORRECT AND YOU HAVE THE PROPER PRODUCT, HEY, YOU GOT A GOOD SANDWICH? THE WEST END IS HOME TO THE ROYAL NAVAL DOCKYARD. THE KEEP AND COMMISSIONER’S HOUSE COMPRISED THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA. ELENA STRONG IS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. BERMUDA WAS IDENTIFIED AS A STRATEGIC LOCATION FOR THE ROYAL NAVY TO HAVE A BASE AND ALSO TO HAVE A PLACE FOR THEIR FLEET TO TO BE OUTFITTED, REPAIRS, DOCKYARD WAS THE LARGEST CONSTRUCTION PROJECT DONE IN BERMUDA’S HISTORY. IT’S ONE BIG MAN MADE SCULPTURE. THEY BLASTED EVERYTHING WHEN THE NAVY LEFT IN 1951. DECAY SET IN. WHEN I WAS A KID, THE ROOF WAS OFF. COMMISSIONERS HOUSE. IT’S ALL CAST IRON. SO IT LOOKED LIKE SOME HORRIBLE TETANUS ISSUE ON TOP OF THE HILL. TODAY. THE HOUSE CONTAINS EXHIBIT SPACE AND A MUCH PRIZED CONTEMPORARY MURAL DISPLAYING 500 YEARS OF HISTORY BEGINNING WITH THE ISLAND’S DISCOVERY BY JUAN DE BERMUDEZ IN 1505. A FORTIFIED ORDNANCE BUILDING IS FILLED WITH SHIPWRECK ARTIFACTS. SO WE HAVE A COLLECTION OF OVER 80,000 OBJECTS THAT RELATE TO ALL ASPECTS OF BERMUDA HISTORY. AND THEN WE EVEN COLLECT MODERN DAY ARTIFACTS SO THAT WE’RE PROTECTING FROM THE FUTURE. AND THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BERMUDA TURNS 50 THIS YEAR. LOTS OF POWERFUL EXHIBITS IN THE MUSEUM DESCRIBES ITSELF AS HOME TO BERMUDA’S CULTURAL PAST AND ITS COLLECTIVE FUTURE. THAT IS, CHRONICLE FOR TONIGHT. THANKS SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. I’M SHAYNA SEYMOUR AND I’M ANTHONY. EVERETT WASN’T IT NICE TO SEE SOME OH MY GOSH, I HAVE A GREA

Getting away on a Bermuda-ful vacation

Bike through the backroads, try a famous fish sandwich at Woody's, and explore history at the National Museum of Bermuda.

Think Bermuda. Only two hours by air, but, as the unofficial anthem reminds us, “Bermuda is another world 700 miles at sea.”Bermuda is only 22 square miles, but getting from end to end is a challenge on four wheels or two. Ferries offer a scenic way to travel, but we opt for pedal bikes and back roads on the Bermuda Railway Trail. What a clam roll is to the north shore and a lobster roll to Maine is the fish sandwich in Bermuda, and Woody’s is the local landmark for it. The west end is home to the Royal Naval dockyard. Today the keep and commissioner’s house comprise the National Museum of Bermuda.
