Bermuda keeping an eye on passage of Hurricane Nigel - Jamaica Gleaner

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – A few days after Hurricane Lee swept past Bermuda as a Category 1 storm, knocking out power across the island and closing businesses and schools, residents of the British Overseas Territory are on Monday keeping a close eye on the passage of Hurricane Nigel.

Lee, the third major hurricane for the 2023 Atlantic season, appeared to have spared the island any major damage as the Caribbean buckles down for the peak hurricane season, with Hurricane Nigel brewing nearby.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center said that Hurricane Nigel is forecast to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane on Tuesday.

The storm is about 935 miles east, southeast of Bermuda.

The hurricane centre, in its latest weather bulletin, said that Nigel is moving towards the northwest near 12 mph and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

It said Nigel is then forecast to turn northward late Tuesday and then accelerate northeastward through the rest of the week.

“Nigel is forecast to rapidly strengthen into a major hurricane on Tuesday. A gradual weakening trend could start late Wednesday,” the centre said, adding that there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
