The Bermuda Weather Service 3pm update on Hurricane Lee

Public schools will close tomorrow and Friday due to Hurricane Lee, the Government announced this afternoon.

However Government services will operate as normal tomorrow and the Causeway will remain open, according to the acting Minister of National Security, Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch.

Giving an update this afternoon on the hurricane, Colonel Burch added that “out of abundance of caution” ferry services will be suspended tomorrow with an assessment made on Friday.

He said buses will run to normal schedules tomorrow until 5.30pm when operations will be suspended with an assessment of routes carried out on Friday morning.

Flights at LF Wade International Airport will be suspended from tomorrow with exception of the BA flights to and from the island which are expected to proceed as normal.

Earlier the island was placed under a tropical storm warning as Hurricane Lee approaches the island.

In its 9am update, the Bermuda Weather Service said conditions will rapidly deteriorate tomorrow as the latest guidance continues to show Lee weakening from a category 2 hurricane on Thursday afternoon to Category 1.

The Bermuda Weather Service noon update

The BWS forecast said: “The latest National Hurricane Centre advisory has the 35 knot wind radii entering our south-west marine area around 7am to 8am, then reaching onshore around 11am to noon, therefore the forecast calls for 35 to 45 knots with gusts around 65 knots for most of that day, with a peak sustained wind around 50 knots in the western marine areas as well as elevated/exposed areas.

“As Lee makes its nearest approach late Thursday night into Friday, periods of rain and showers with possible thunderstorms under overcast skies are expected, with improved conditions from Friday evening onwards.”

Orange ferry route

As a result of the current inclement weather the Orange route ferry services will be suspended today as of 2pm departing St George’s. All other routes are currently operating as scheduled today.

The closest point of approach is forecast to be 188 miles to the west at 1am on Friday.

It added: “The 35 knots wind radii finally exits the marine area around 4pm Friday and south west winds will gradually veer to the west while easing to 15 to 25 knots overnight.

“The sea state will get very hazardous as seas peak between 18ft to 28ft before diminishing during the latter part of Friday.”

The BWS said a tropical storm warning is in effect and consideration may be given if a hurricane watch may be issued.
