Infamous Northern Michigan Golf Course is Slowly Coming Back to Life - 9&10 News

An infamous Northern Michigan Golf Club that was built by a world-renowned golf course designer Tom Doak is being rebuilt.

High Pointe Golf Club was first designed by Doak and opened back in 1989. The course rose to 79 on Golf Magazine’s list of top 100 golf courses in the United States. However, due to financial issues, the course closed in 2008.

Now, 15 years later, High Pointe Golf Club is slowly being brought back to life as crews broke ground last month.

While the course will look a little different, the founder of High Pointe Golf Club, Rod Trump, says some things will look just as it did before it closed down. He says they are bringing back six of the original holes.

Trump says he’s excited to bring back such a historical course to Northern Michigan.

“The land here is incredible. One of the ingredients to building a truly great golf course is you need a sandy site, and we have that, and we have rolling hills. So, the land has natural movement,” Trump says. “Our goal is very simple, we want to make High Pointe the high point of golf.”

They are expecting to have between eight and 12 holes opened by June 2024, with the remainder of the course opening later that summer.
