If juvenile detainees are getting an intro to law course, why no law classes in County Jail? - cleveland.com

May 1 was Law Day. We can honor that day with life-enhancing news for the students at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center. Intro-to-law classes will be offered for the 2023-24 school year there. Thanks to Wayne Marok, principal administrator of the Downtown Education Center, who introduced the idea to his staff, all agreed.

I presented the idea of offering law classes in the County Jail to County Administrator Chris Ronayne, Interim Sheriff Joseph Greiner and some members of Mayor Justin Bibb’s cabinet. I haven’t heard back.

Can we give these citizens hope by initiating a “prison to law” pipeline here in Cleveland? I recommend that Administrative Judges Brendan J. Sheehan at Common Pleas Court and Michelle D. Earley at Cleveland Municipal Court, and County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley, encourage their staffs to donate all their old law books to the citizens incarcerated right there in their building.

Many of these people are at their lowest point and devoid of hope for the future. Exposure to the law curriculum coupled with the knowledge that the judges and attorneys considered how this could alter their lives positively and perhaps forever cannot be understated. They need this!
