As the 2022 Carifta Games are set to kick off, the island enters the Games with a rather notable distinction, with Bermuda holding the oldest record, thanks to Sonya Smith’s record setting javelin throw over 40 years ago, back in 1979
This is according to the official website which said, “The oldest record in the books, though [at least for events still being contested in the modern Games], belongs to Bermuda’s Sonya Smith, whose Under-20 Javelin Throw performance of 53.98m has been on the books since 1979.”
In addition to this long standing record, Bermuda has also held the Commonwealth Games high jump record for some 30 years, with the record setting leap from Clarence ‘Nicky’ Saunders set back in 1990.
Bermuda’s Carifta teams recently departed the island, with athletes set to take part in track and field and swimming — with the events set to be held in two different locations, with swimming in Barbados and track & field in Jamaica — and our athletes are expected to be highly competitive at these Games.
