Padres News: Friars score all the runs, wallop Nationals 24-8 - Gaslamp Ball

The Padres were coming off a four-day break as the MLB put on their All-Star event earlier in the week and it looks like they wanted to make up for lost time in the runs department.

In their first game back to kick off the final half of the season, the Friars offense exploded — no, erupted — no, it went NUCLEAR against the Nationals for a 24-run performance, breaking the previous franchise record of 20.

Jake Cronenworth and Wil Myers were the stars of the night’s fireworks show after the former hit for the cycle, becoming the third Padre in history to achieve the feat, and the latter for going yard twice: one for a grand slam (#SlamDiego) and the other a two-run homer.

In all, the Padres recorded 22 hits against Washington.

Both teams were even after one with an early score of 3-3. San Diego followed with a seven-run effort in the second which supplanted an already-insurmountable lead. After scoring a lone run from the third through the fifth, they went off for another six runs in the sixth. The only inning they failed to score in was the seventh. After that came five more runs to push their total into franchise record territory.

Along with Cronenworth, Tommy Pham also recorded a game-high four hits. Myers and Eric Hosmer each put up three, as well.

Starter Chris Paddack went five innings, striking out just two while allowing four runs. Miguel Diaz followed in the sixth and allowed another four runs off a pair of home runs.

Five Washington pitchers allowed at least three runs, with starter Erick Fedde allowing six through the first 1 13 inning. The only member of the bullpen to not allow a run on the night was Ryne Harper who struck out three in 1 23.

Game two is set for this evening at 4:05 p.m. Blake Snell (3-3, 4.99 ERA) will start against Patrick Corbin (6-7, 5.40 ERA).
