The Hawks are on the ropes after dropping Game 5 on the road, a contest that was devoid of the two biggest stars in this series due to absences from Atlanta’s Trae Young and Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks came out on top by a 123-112 margin, an especially impressive feat considering they accomplished it without a two-time league MVP in the lineup.
With that result in the books, here is a look back at how the first five games of the Eastern Conference Finals have played out and some highlights from Game 5:

Antetokounmpo’s absence on Thursday was noticeable—hardly a shock given he had been averaging 28.2 points, 12.7 boards and 5.2 assists during the 2021 NBA Playoffs—but Milwaukee’s other players stepped up big in his absence.
Few would have predicted that Brook Lopez would be the catalyst for a Bucks victory on Thursday, but the veteran center had one of the best performances of his postseason career. The 33-year-old dominated in the offensive paint, finishing with a game-high 33 points on a blistering 14-of-18 shooting while also adding seven boards—four of which were on the offensive glass—four blocks and two steals in the matchup.
It wasn’t a one-man show for Milwaukee though, as swingman Khris Middleton continued his scintillating playoff run by putting up well-rounded 26 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and a block in Game 5. Two other starters also chipped in 20-plus points, with Jrue Holiday nabbing 25 and Bobby Portis—who entered the starting lineup in place of Antetokounmpo—contributing 22 to help the Bucks get within a single victory of the NBA Finals.
In wake of the victory, Portis said his team’s players were well aware that they needed to be at their best due to their sidelined superstar (via TheAtlantaVoice.com):
“Knowing the situation we were in, one of the best players in the world went down on our team. So other guys had to step up. Guys stepped up and played their role to a ‘T.’ ”
Atlanta couldn’t find enough firepower to overcome their opponent’s multipronged attack and seemed lost at times without Trae Young directing the offense. The 22-year-old was sidelined for the contest due to a bone bruise on his right foot, a huge blow to the Hawks chances after the he had been averaging 29.8 points and 9.5 assists during his first career playoff run.
Young may be returning to the lineup tonight after a one-game absence, however, and his presence will be a major boon in Atlanta’s quest to force a decisive Game 7. Here’s the latest update on the two injured stars and the complete injury report for Game 6:

Milwaukee Bucks

- F Giannis Antetokounmpo, Out (Knee)
Chris Haynes tweeted that Antetokounmpo may be available for Game 7 if the Hawks are able to win this evening:
With their win in the last outing, the Bucks moved to 7-5 on the year and 15-13 overall since Mike Budenholzer became head coach without Antetokounmpo in the lineup. They aren’t favored to continue improving that record tonight though, as oddsmakers have tabbed Atlanta as the favorite for Game 6.
