The Mets dropped an awful loss to the Pirates by a score of 6-5. They had a 5-0 lead in the first inning after the offense beat up on Pirates’ starter Chase De Jung. Francisco Lindor hit a two-run blast and Michael Conforto got off the schneid with a three-run bomb to center. But the offense went quiet from there.
Aaron Loup opened for the Mets and started the game with two scoreless innings. Jerad Eickhoff followed and threw two scoreless of his own, but then ran into trouble in the fifth when he surrendered back-to-back homers.
Jeurys Familia came in to escape the jam in the fifth, but stayed on for the sixth and allowed two more runs to cross on a two-run homer by Rodolfo Castro, his second of the game, to cut the Mets lead to 5-4.
Familia escaped the inning, and then Miguel Castro came on and pitched a scoreless seventh. He stayed on for the eighth, recorded the first out, but then allowed a walk and a hit to put the tying run at third base with only one out. Edwin Díaz came on for a five-out save and struck out the next two to escape the jam.
After the Mets couldn’t score in the top of the ninth, Díaz stayed in for the ninth trying to finish off the last three outs. He got the first out, but then allowed a double to Kevin Newman. A Bryan Reynolds groundout moved him to third, and then John Nogoswki laced a single up the middle to tie the game. Ben Gamel then singled to get him over to third, and Wilmer Difo laced one down the left field line to give the Pirates the stunning 6-5 lead.
Luis Guillorme got on to start the ninth with a hit, but Brandon Nimmo hit into a double play and Lindor popped out to end the game, and seal what was probably the Mets’ worst loss of the season. They didn’t score a single run after the first inning.
