Marcus Stroman and the Mets kept pace with the Pirates on the first leg of Saturday’s doubleheader until a solo home run by opposing pitcher Tyler Anderson in the top of the fifth inning gave the Pirates the lead for good. Another two-run home run by All-Star Bryan Reynolds an inning later sealed the deal for Pittsburgh, as they beat the Mets 5-2 in seven innings Saturday afternoon in Queens.
Brandon Nimmo showed out in the first inning, robbing a potential Reynolds home run to end the top of the inning before leading off the bottom inning with a single. He would eventually score on a Kevin Pillar RBI single, but that’s all the Mets were able to muster in the first.
A John Nogowski RBI double in the fourth inning briefly gave the Pirates the lead, to which the Mets responded with a solo home run by Jonathan Villar, his third in the last two games. With Stroman back on the mound with two outs facing the pitcher in the top of the fifth, he looked to be cruising towards a quality start, but he instead watched a two-strike hanger sail beyond the right-center field fence, a blow from which the Mets could not recover.
The second game of the doubleheader is set to start soon, with Pirates pitcher Max Kranick getting his second-career start against Tylor Megill, who himself is getting his fourth career start.
