Los Angeles Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani gave up seven runs before exiting just two outs into the first inning Wednesday against the New York Yankees. But six hours later and after multiple weather delays, the Angels picked him up, scoring seven runs of their own in the ninth to secure an 11-8 win at Yankee Stadium.
Trailing 8-4 in the top of the ninth, the Angels tied the game when Jared Walsh hit a grand slam off of Aroldis Chapman. They scored three more runs off of Lucas Luetge, taking the lead on a two-run single by Luis Rengifo.
The Angels did it despite losing their leadoff hitter in the first inning. Manager Joe Maddon waived using a designated hitter so Ohtani could hit, but it meant he could not be replaced by a DH in the lineup if he was pulled from the game. Ohtani batted leadoff as a pitcher, but was wild on the mound, walking four and giving up two hits on 41 pitches.
Aaron Slegers came on in relief, giving up a three-run double to DJ LeMahieu with the bases loaded, and those runs were charged to Ohtani.
Ohtani has hit for himself in eight of 11 starts this season, playing just 6 1/3 innings in the outfield. He was only the fourth MLB player since 1900 to bat leadoff and pitch against the Yankees.
As a result of the early exit, Ohtani batted only once, flying out to center field. Ohtani entered the day as the MLB leader in home runs (28) and the American League leader in triples (four) and slugging percentage (.688). His ERA rose from 2.58 to 3.60 with the short outing on Wednesday.
The Yankees ended June by losing five of their last six. The Angels went 15-11 in June to get within two games of .500.
