No. 5 Texas A&M has shown no signs of lacking motivation as it bounces back from its College Football Playoff snub, leading No. 13 North Carolina 7-3 at the end of the first quarter in the Orange Bowl.
Sam Howell got off to a rocky start with an interception on North Carolina's first offensive possession, setting up Texas A&M inside the 30-yard line after the Tar Heels' defense had forced a three-and-out on the first series of the game. The Aggies leaned heavily on Isaiah Spiller and took advantage of the short field by scoring a touchdown, though it took a fourth-down conversion to finally punch it in and establish a 7-0 lead.
North Carolina did have an answer on the ensuing possession, marching 63 yards in 11 plays before stalling in the red zone and settling for a field goal. The Tar Heels seemed to have some rhythm with its rushing attack, which may be missing 1,000-yard rushers Javonte Williams and Michael Carter but has gotten some strong running from backup British Brooks. Texas A&M, unlike many of North Carolina's opponents, has been able to match and even exceed the Tar Heels sideline-to-sideline speed. Figuring out ways to open up the Aggies defense, especially in the red zone, will be a key if the underdog is going to keep it close in Miami Gardens.
