Texas looked more than ready to end a nine-game road losing streak to Kansas during the first half of Saturday's Big 12 showdown, as the No. 8 Longhorns took a 37-29 lead on the No. 3 Jayhawks into the break. Kai Jones surpassed his season scoring average of 8.8 points in the first half alone by scoring 12 to lead all scorers in the first half.
The Texas forward scored nine of those points in the final five minutes of the half as the Longhorns put some distance between themselves and a Jayhawks team riding an eight-game winning streak. Kansas struggled to get quality looks in its half court offense as 12 of its 29 points came off turnovers. Ochai Agbaji hit Kansas' first 3-pointer of the game with 46 seconds left in the half and led the Jayhawks with 11 points in the first half. In total, Kansas shot just 32% from the field in the first half and got just two bench points.
This looks like the best Texas team during coach Shaka Smart's six-year tenure, and a win at Kansas would go a long way toward proving it. But the Jayhawks are already battle-tested both in and out of the conference and have won 13 straight at Allen Fieldhouse, which means they aren't going to go down quietly in the second half.
