Final score: Chiefs survive Mahomes’ absence, beat Browns 22-17 - Arrowhead Pride

There isn’t a worse situation for the Kansas City Chiefs than an injury to quarterback Patrick Mahomes. As they led by two possessions in the third quarter, Mahomes suffered a head injury that forced him out for the remainder of the contest. Backup quarterback Chad Henne came in and held the lead — even if if took diving head first to try and convert a third-and 14 — and eventually threw the game-sealing pass to wide receiver Tyreek Hill defeat the Cleveland Browns 22-17.

Mahomes finished 21 of 30, with 255 passing yards and two total touchdowns. Henne totaled 66 passing yards in relief of Mahomes. Hill and tight end Travis Kelce combined for 16 catches and 219 receiving yards — while running back Darrel Williams carried the backfield load with 78 rushing yards.

On the game’s opening drive, the Chiefs’ offense took their time progressing down the field. A mix of good runs by Darrel Williams and a 26-yard reception by Tyreek Hill set the Chiefs up inside the red zone. From the 2-yard line, quarterback Patrick Mahomes punched the ball in on a speed option to take the initial 6-0 lead; Harrison Butker missed the extra point.

The Browns answered the Kansas City score with a methodical drive of their own. Multiple third down conversions set Cleveland up at the Chiefs’ 20-yard line, but a sack by rookie cornerback L’Jarius Sneed forced the Browns into a third-and-21. After a short throw on that play, Cleveland settled for a 46-yard field goal to make the score 6-3.

The Chiefs’ took the ball back and began their possession with a quick toss to wide receiver Mecole Hardman that went 42 yards into Cleveland territory. An 11-yard completion to wide receiver Byron Pringle put Kansas City at the 11-yard line before the first quarter ended.

The second quarter began with a holding call on center Austin Reiter that put the Chiefs at second-and-19. On that play, Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce wide open across the middle and watched as he dove over Hardman into the end zone to make the score 13-3; Kelce shook cornerback Denzel Ward on a quick route to create the separation.

Cleveland started the next drive on a positive note with a 23-yard pass to wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, who beat cornerback Charvarius Ward on the play. A holding call and two dropped passes later, the Browns put themselves in a third-and 20 situation around midfield. Rookie defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton batted down the third-down pass at the line of scrimmage to force a punt.

Kansas City continued their offensive dominance with another drive consisting of chunk plays both through the air and on the ground. On a third-and-8, Mahomes scrambled for a first down to set the Chiefs up at the 27-yard line. Two unsuccessful plays led to another third-and-long, and Darrel Williams was blown up on a screen pass to force fourth down. Butker extended the lead to 16-3 with a 50-yard field goal.

With time winding down in the first half, Cleveland found their way into Chiefs’ territory as the two-minute warning hit. A 23-yard reception by wide receiver Rashard Higgins set the Browns up at the 26-yard line. On the next play, Higgins caught a pass and dove for the pylon — but a tackle by safety Dan Sorensen forced the ball to come out short of the goal line. It went through the end zone for a touchback with 1:34 remaining in the second quarter.

The Chiefs’ offense took the ball and maneuvered their way into Cleveland territory with under 30 seconds on the game clock. Mahomes found Kelce over the middle to get down to the Browns’ 25-yard line with 14 seconds remaining. They eventually got Butker into position to convert a 28-yard field goal to make the score 19-3 at halftime.

The Browns received the kickoff in the third quarter. After two incompletions, quarterback Baker Mayfield attempted a throw across the middle on third-and-10, but safety Tyrann Mathieu jumped in front of the receiver and intercepted the pass.

Starting at Cleveland’s 19-yard line, the Chiefs failed to earn a first down. They settled for a 33-yard field goal attempt — but Butker missed, hitting the left pylon and keeping the score at 19-3.

The Browns started the following drive with an 23-yard run by Nick Chubb — then an 18-yarder to get into Kansas City territory. After that, Mayfield found Higgins to put Cleveland in the red zone at the 16-yard line. A few plays later, Landry snagged a pass on the side of the end zone for a 4-yard score to make it 19-10.

The Chiefs started their second drive of the third quarter with a third-and-1 situation near midfield. A speed option play with Mahomes didn’t convert — and it also caused what appeared to be a head injury to Mahomes. The Chiefs sent backup quarterback Chad Henne into the game to take over, and he helped the offense get into field goal position. Butker converted the 33-yard kick to make the score 22-10.

With four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Cleveland took over and got themselves into a fourth-and-1 on their own side of the field. They converted with a short run by Chubb. They got further into Chiefs territory with a third-down conversion to Higgins as the third quarter ended.

From the Kansas City 33-yard line, the Browns crept closer to scoring. On a fourth down from the 12-yard line, Cleveland converted with a pass to tight end Austin Hooper. The Chiefs were able to stop the Browns on the following two plays — but on third down, running back Kareem Hunt ran into the end zone to shrink their deficit to 22-17.

On the first play of the Chiefs’ ensuing drive, Hill made an incredibly tough contested catch on a quick fade throw from Henne. That play set up a big third-down conversion to Kelce — getting the offense inside the 25-yard line. Soon after, Henne decided to take a shot to the end zone, but Browns’ safety Karl Joseph came up with an easy interception.

The turnover put Cleveland — down by five points — at the 20-yard line with eight minutes remaining. After two short plays, the Browns were inches away from a conversion on third down. They decided to go for the short fourth down attempt, and got it with a quarterback sneak.

Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones blew up a run play right after that, setting up a second-and-long play. A screen pass was blown up on the next play — and on third down, Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward came up to tackle Kareem Hunt in the flat to force a punt.

Kansas City took over at their own 28-yard line with four minutes remaining in the contest. On third-and-4 after two minimal gains, they converted on a pass to Darrel Williams in the flat. They worked to drain the clock as much as possible, but Henne took a sack to get into third-and-long at the two-minute warning.

Henne rolled out left on that third down with 14 yards to convert, and scrambled all the way to the first down marker. He ended up inches away from a conversion; the team took the field on a fourth down with inches to go.

After what looked like a plan to draw the defense offsides, Henne took the snap and found Hill on a sprint out pass to put the game away.

Injuries

  • Quarterback Patrick Mahomes had his left big toe checked out on the sideline after the offense’s second possession — but didn’t miss any game time.
  • Mahomes left the game in the third quarter with an apparent head injury. He looked dazed as he got up from the tackle, and sprinted to the locker room soon after. The team announced he was being evaluated for a concussion. Early in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs declared him out for the game.
  • Cornerback Bashaud Breeland was seen going into the medical tent in the fourth quarter. The team later announced he was being evaluated for a concussion, and then ruled him out for the game.

Special teams

  • Kicker Harrison Butker missed the extra point on the game’s opening drive by a wide margin to the left. He also missed a 33-yard field goal at the beginning of the third quarter.
