STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Alternate captain Nick Blankenburg scored two goals and contributed an assist, but the No. 7-ranked Michigan ice hockey team fell, 9-5, to Penn State on Thursday night (Dec. 3) at Pegula Ice Arena.
The high-powered offensive output that would become the story of the evening began shortly after puck drop, with the teams combining to record three goals in the opening 2:44. Penn State scored the first two in just 2:22 before Blankenburg, answered back 20 seconds later with a strong solo effort of his own. Blankenburg picked up a loose puck in the Michigan end before pushing the play up the ice. Sensing that the PSU defender's gap was poor, the junior turned on the jets to exploit the opportunity by gliding past the Nittany Lion defense and ripping a low wrist shot into the back of the net to cut the early deficit to one, 2-1.
Following the game's initial three-goal burst, Nolan Moyle was sent off for the night with a major penalty and a game-misconduct. After going 2-for-2 on the penalty kill in Wednesday night's 3-1 win (Dec. 2), the U-M penalty-kill unit continued its strong play during the five-minute sequence to get the team back to full strength.
Later in the first period, Blankenburg took advantage of a U-M power-play chance, scoring his second of the evening with 5:51 left in the stanza. Fellow alternate captain Jimmy Lambert and freshman Kent Johnson recorded the assists. After 20 minutes, the teams were tied at 2.
Less than one minute into the second period, Cam York flipped a fancy backhand shot from the slot over the goaltender's shoulder to give U-M its first lead of the contest at 3-2. Johnny Beecher and Jack Becker picked up the assists on the tally as all three U-M goals had come from defensemen.
After PSU struck back to tie the game at 3 on Aarne Talvitie's second goal of the night, freshman Thomas Bordeleau received a pass in the neutral zone from classmate Brendan Brisson. Bordeleau protected the puck from a lone PSU defender as he drove in toward the net. As he neared the blue paint, Bordeleau went backhand to forehand and uncorked a quick shot to beat the goaltender and pull Michigan back into the lead, 4-3, at 5:18 in the middle frame.
Things unraveled a bit for the Wolverines after PSU scored its fourth goal to even the game again after a blocked shot skittered into an open space for a Nittany Lion to step into and deposit the puck past a scrambling Strauss Mann. A few minutes later, Penn State added another quick pair of goals to take a 6-4 lead at 11:17 of the second period. After the goals, freshman Erik Portillo made his collegiate debut in net for the Wolverines.
Before the end of the period, Penn State collected another goal with 2:47 left to make it 7-4. After 40 minutes, the Nittany Lions were up three goals while outshooting U-M, 32-15.
After the teams combined for a seven-goal second period, it took 13:39 of the final frame to record another. Bordeleau made a beautiful pass from the right dot to his linemate Brisson, who was skating down the center of the ice toward the blue paint. Brisson received Bordeleau's pass before fooling the goalie and scoring with a single move to his backhand to cut the U-M deficit to 7-5. Nick Granowicz added an assist on the goal.
With 1:44 remaining at Pegula Ice Arena, Penn State buried an empty-net goal to take an 8-5 advantage and sink the Michigan comeback bid. Adding in a late goal at 5-on-5 to make it 9-5, the Nittany Lions finished off their first win of the season.
Next week, the Wolverines will welcome No. 5 Minnesota to Yost Ice Arena, with mid-week games scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 8-9). Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday with both games being broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
