The Detroit Lions will make NFL history on Saturday, being the first team to have their head coach—albeit an interim head coach—miss the game due to COVID-19 protocols. Of course, the bigger story may be that it’s not just Darrell Bevell who will be forced to watch from a hotel room, it’s nearly the Lions’ entire defensive coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Cory Undlin is out. The Lions defensive line, linebacker coach and defensive backs coaches are all out. The Lions will have to rely on first-time play callers on both offense and defense. And all of this is just five days removed from the Lions firing their special teams coordinator for jumping authority and calling his own fake punt. It’s, to put bluntly, an absolute train wreck.
But, of course, it’s our human nature to be morbidly curious about train wrecks. For a 5-9 team headed for a rebuild, this is a pretty intriguing storyline for Week 16. Normally, I’d be pretty checked out by now, but I’m fascinated to see what an NFL team looks like without half its coaching staff, and I’m genuinely rooting for wide receivers coach Robert Prince to do a good job as interim/interim head coach.
Unfortunately, the stark reality is that the Lions have all the cards stacked against them on Saturday. They’re facing a better, healthier team that isn’t missing anyone from their coaching staff. They’ve got a dangerous offense that will undoubtedly give Detroit’s defense fits.
So it should come as no surprise that our entire staff is picking the Bucs to beat up on this shorthanded-by-every-definition-of-the-word Lions team.
