Wanaki Golf Course in Menomonee Falls is on the market.
Waukesha County officials listed the course for sale with the intention that it would remain a golf course, although privately run.
The course will be for sale until June 30 for golf course operations, according to county press secretary Nicole Armendariz. If there is no sale by then, the county will look to sell the property for the highest price and best use, she said.
According to the listing with Colliers International, a real estate company based in Toronto, the sale would be subjected to a deed restriction that the property is to be used only for golf course purposes for four years from the closing date.
This 148-acre golf course is listed at $1,520,000 — about $10,270 per acre — which includes the 18-hole golf course and equipment, maintenance facilities, carts and storage facilities, putting green and clubhouse with pro shop, bar and grill, locker rooms and restrooms.
"I am optimistic," said Joe Vachuska, co-founder of the Save Wanaki group. "I hope a deal can be made.
"We just want to golf here. We would love for the course to continue."
The goal of running it privately
Because Wanaki ran on a deficit for the last 10 years and because of a lack of future sustainability, funding for the golf course was initially not included in Farrow's 2020 budget proposal.
Dale Shaver, director of the Waukesha County Department of Parks and Land Use, said last summer that closing Wanaki would create more financial stability for the county's other two golf courses, Delafield's Naga-Waukee and Waukesha's Moor Downs, which operate under one fund.
Shaver also said Wanaki has lost about $41,000 to $243,000 annually for the last decade. Significant infrastructure repairs and upgrades are also needed at Wanaki — estimated at more than $645,000.
But after resident protests and a 6,000-signature petition was presented seeking to keep the course open, county supervisors voted to keep the course under county operation for one more year when they passed the 2020 budget in November.
Wanaki momentum
Vachuska said he and the other members of the Save Wanaki group are taking advantage of the nice weather to golf there. He said the men's golf club had 96 golfers last week.
"The place was packed," he said. "People just want to golf there."
According to the fact sheet on the Save Wanaki website, the course is home to many clubs, including a 270-member men’s club, a 75-member ladies 18-hole club and a 65-member senior men’s league. Wanaki also serves as the home course for numerous high school golf teams
Vachuska also said that if county officials come up with a deal to keep Wanaki, he would be willing to work with them to keep Wanaki going.
"If the new owners want to reach out, we look forward to working with them," he said.
"We would love to continue to golf at the course and to save Wanaki," he added.
