Although the renovation itself only took a few months, course architect Andrew Green says the process has been in the works for years.
"We dug through all of the club archives, which were spectacular. We also looked at the golf house that USGA has archived, the Tuft's archives in Pinehurst. We found information all over and utilized that in this process," Green said.
The largest changes are to the 5th, 6th and 15th holes, which were previously renovated in the '70s.
"Andrew Green rerouted the 5th hole to make it a par 3. The old 5th hole became our now 6th hole and is a long par 4 with Allens Creek running through the middle of the fairway now. The 15th hole, which is a par 3, we eliminated the pond and brought it back and restored it to the original Donald Ross style of a hole," Oak Hill Club President Jim McKenna said.
Honoring the course's original Donald Ross design was a main focus during the renovation.
"This project really returned the golf course to its roots, to a Donald Ross design. Obviously, the game's changed a great deal since the golf course was first built, but we tried to respect Mr. Ross as much as we could," Green said.
The new look also prepares Oak Hill for its next PGA Championship in 2023.
"Not just the greens, but also the bunkers are gonna prove to be very challenging, and I think the professionals will find it a very challenging but fair course to play," McKenna said.
"I think the golfers are gonna be surprised and what they see. A lot of interesting hole locations, a lot of variability in the setup. I think they're gonna be tested," Green said.
