Hurricane Central
- Hurricane Humberto is tracking well off the southeastern U.S. coast.
- High surf and dangerous rip currents are expected along the Southeast coast.
- Later this week, Humberto could pass near Bermuda, where a tropical storm watch is posted.
Hurricane Humberto is generating high surf and rip currents along the Southeast coast and may also threaten Bermuda later this week.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a tropical storm watch for Bermuda. This means tropical-storm-force winds (39-plus mph) are possible in the archipelago, generally within 48 hours.
Humberto is gaining strength after becoming the third hurricane of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season late Sunday night. The hurricane is currently moving east-northeastward away from the southeastern United States.
Additional strengthening is likely, and Humberto could become a Category 3 hurricane by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, according to the NHC.
Its exact path remains somewhat uncertain, but Humberto could pass near Bermuda Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Humberto's wind field size is expected to grow by the time it gets to Bermuda, increasing the chance of at least tropical-storm-force winds that could arrive as soon as late Wednesday.
The NHC says Humberto may bring periods of heavy rain to Bermuda beginning late Tuesday, and large swells generated by the hurricane will increase along the coast of Bermuda by Tuesday night. Residents and visitors in the archipelago should be preparing for these threats.
Humberto will bring high surf and dangerous rip currents to the southeastern U.S. coast as well. Beachgoers from the east coast of Florida to North Carolina should stay out of the water through early this week.
For now, Humberto's center should remain well off the rest of the Eastern Seaboard late this week. However, high surf and rip currents appear likely to spread up the East Coast later this week and may linger into the weekend. Keep this in mind if you have beach plans the last weekend of summer.
Humberto's center is expected to remain well south of the Canadian Maritimes to avoid a repeat of the blasting they received from Dorian over a week ago.
