SILVER CREEK — The Silver Creek Central School District is excited about three new courses that were approved to begin in the fall of 2023 at a recent Board of Education meeting.

At the meeting, High School Principal Kyle Yelich spoke about two of those courses – Intro to Computer Science and The Physical World – Applications of Chemistry and Physics. The other course that was approved, Advanced Family and Consumer Science – The World of Minis, was covered at a previous meeting.

Intro to Computer Science is a course taught by Josh Sadler for high school students grades nine to 12 designed to introduce students to programming and IT fundamentals. Students will also be introduced to drones through computer software and will receive hands-on training to operate them.

“The opportunity for students, specifically with drone technology that is attached to this, is profound,” said Yelich, who noted that pilot’s licenses for drone technology can be obtained through the course work.

The course was piloted this year and received enough interest to convince the district to move forward with it full-time.

“It’s something we really want to see grow here,” Yelich said. “The workforce really demands our students to be technologically capable.”

The Physical World – Applications of Chemistry and Physics is a non-regents course for high school juniors and seniors that need a third science course to focus on physical sciences.

“The science department came together over the last couple years. … They have found that having an elective that is more hands-on, more approachable, and more realistic for students that’s not attached to a regents exam is very much warranted,” Yelich said.

According to the district, “the course will seek to blend the various aspects of Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy together with hands-on laboratory assignments and real-world applications.” The course would cover the applications of Newtonian physics, space and time, electricity and energy, and the basics of the atom.

“This is that fun type of class where students get to hear theories and actually put their hands on the materials,” said Yelich. “It’s just fun, it brings that engagement back to learning.”

Advanced Family and Consumer Science – The World of Minis is a course for eighth grade students that would challenge students to construct environments to replicate life as they know it on a much smaller scale. The course will be “heavily internet dependent for research and instructional support,” according to the district. This course requires students to implement mathematical concepts such as scale, ratios, and measuring as well as social studies concepts involving historical knowledge of time periods, cultures, and eras to design environments from the past.

The district also approved Sara Woods as a probationary TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) Teacher.

Also at the meeting, the resignation for the purpose of retirement of Superintendent Todd Crandall was officially accepted by the Board of Education. Crandall will continue at his post through the end of the school year, with his resignation taking effect on June 30. Board of Education President Martha Howard joked, “If we all vote no, will you stay?” The board then voted unanimously in favor of accepting Crandall’s resignation and thanked him for his eight years of service to the district.

The Board of Education also accepted the timeline for the new superintendent search. Applicants must apply by Friday, March 24. Preliminary interviews will take place from April 18-20, with final interviews from May 1-3. The Board of Education is targeting June 1 as a date by which a decision will be made, with the new superintendent taking over on July 1.
