Course brought back to help ease learning curve of new company leadership - DVIDS

Leading a military Company is rewarding, and challenging. Reviewing inventories, signing administrative paperwork and counseling soldiers can leave leaders very little time to take part in the training they helped plan.

To help ease the burden, Guard members from multiple units, with the assistance from 1st Battalion, 205th Regimental Training Institute, re-introduced the Commander / First Sergeant Course, Sept. 10-11, 2022 at the Yakima Training Center.

“The last time this course was offered was 2018 and we knew we wanted to refresh the course and make it worth everyone’s time,” said Maj. Nicholas Stuart, G35 future operations with the Washington Army National Guard. “The goal is to educate all current and incoming command teams via a consistent, well designed and relevant course, establishing a baseline for increased performance.”

Even outside of drill weekends, National Guard company commanders and first sergeants have the most impact on the daily lives of soldiers. They have ability to build the strength of the Guard and shape future leaders in the formation, both critical to the long-term success of the organization. During the two-day course the attendees covered topics like pay and finance, Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) actions, training plans, risk management, sexual harassment/assault response and prevention, equal opportunity and resiliency. Officers learned about property management, operations order process, additional duties and developing future officer leadership. Non-commissioned officers also discussed enlisted leadership development, the board process, career management and health services.

“As an incoming commander or recently instated, this information was paramount to learning future success in running a company with the critical ‘dos and don’ts’ that will not only safeguard your soldiers but you yourself from certain fiscal and legal liability,” said 1Lt Taylor Payne, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 168th General Support Aviation. “Overall, the course was absolutely needed and created open dialogue with a forum including senior leaders in the Guard with resources and briefs required to make us successful.”

To conclude the course, students had the opportunity to go on a run and exchange dialogue with Brig. Gen. Dan Dent, commanding general of the Washington Army National Guard and Command Sgt. Maj. Eric Honeycutt.

“We got to discuss their leadership philosophy in congruence with ‘The Big 6,’ and how we as leaders need to perform and build strong relationships with our soldiers, highlighting strengths, readiness and retention,” said Payne.

While this is the first time in more than four years the Washington Army National Guard held the course, it is expected to be back in 2023 and beyond.

“We are hoping that the officers and NCOs that attended the course will go back to their units and tell their peers, ‘if you want to be in company leadership, this is a must have kind of course,’” said Stuart. “We know we can have 60 students in the class and hope that in the future we get so many that want to take it that we need to offer multiple classes.”
