NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Sailors will depart Newport and start their 635 mile trek to Bermuda Friday.
The biennial Newport Bermuda race has been a popular event among Rhode Islander’s since 1996. This will be the 52nd open-ocean race.
The race is returning for the first time in four years after the race was cancelled in 2020 because of COVID-related concerns.
In 2018, nearly 200 boats and over 1,500 sailors participated in the race.
Larger boats three to five days to land in Bermuda, while smaller boats can take up to a week, according to sailors.
