The Bermuda Weather Service 6am update on a potential tropical storm that is now a potential threat to Bermuda.

A weather system expected to become the first named storm of the year is considered a potential threat to the island.

The system – referred to as Tropical Cyclone One – is still about 1,000 miles from Bermuda in the Gulf of Mexico.

However the Bermuda Weather Service said the system is now forecast to be about 110 miles to the island’s northwest at 5pm on Monday, and could come closer after that time. Earlier forecasts said it could come as close as 90 miles.

The BWS said: “We continue to closely monitor the development and progress of Potential Tropical Cyclone One currently located in the Gulf of Mexico.

“The system will approach Bermuda late Sunday into Monday bringing wet weather and potential tropical storm force conditions.”

The US-based National Hurricane Centre said the storm boasted maximum sustained winds of 40mph and was moving northwest at 7mph.

The NHC said: “The system is expected to develop a well-defined centre and become a tropical storm, and some slight strengthening is possible while it approaches Florida.

“Additional strengthening is possible after the system moves east of Florida over the western Atlantic Saturday night and Sunday.”

If the storm does reach Tropical Storm strength as forecast, it would become the first named storm of the 2022 Hurricane Season, which officially began on Wednesday.
