SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The New York Racing Association (NYRA) is hosting a job fair at the Saratoga Race Course over the weekend, hoping to attract seasonal employees ahead of the start of racing season in July.
The job fair is running through Sunday. Inside the 1863 Club, stations are set up representing the many factions that are part of the Race Course’s workforce needs during the annual summer meets. It’s the first time the annual job fair has been held inside the club, and the first time it’s been held this early.
Companies such as Mazzone Hospitality, Levy Restaurants, Integrated Staffing, and NYRA itself are all hiring summer staff and positions can be offered on the spot. Historically, Saratoga Race Course’s summer meet supports the employment of more than 2,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal workers.
“This job fair is an important way to hire many of our summer positions,” said Pat McKenna, NYRA vice president of communications. “It’s another example of the importance of the race course as an economic engine, not just for the racing community but for the entirety of the city of Saratoga Springs. We’re doing it early this year because right now, this is an incredibly competitive job market. Applicants have many choices in front of them, so we’re fortunate to have the opportunity to hold the job fair a month ahead of our normal routine.”
Many job opportunities are available in a wide variety of positions, from restaurant staff to parking attendants to security guards. Job applicants must be at least 15 years old and have New York State Certified Working Papers. Prospective security guards, cashiers, and betting clerks must be at least 18 years old to apply. Security guards must have a high school degree or GED. All applicants must present a photo ID and Social Security card or I-9 alternative.
While McKenna says that it’s absolutely possible for a seasonal position to lead to a full-time career, many of the people expected to be hired for the summer meet are going to be there just for the season – and there’s nothing wrong with that.
“There are occupations where it makes all the sense in the world to just work a summer job, like for teachers or full-time students,” he noted.
McKenna is hopeful that prospective employees will know how many opportunities are available working at the Race Course, and what sort of job experience they can look forward to if hired. Any jobs at the race course will certainly be busy ones, if what McKenna has seen so far is an accurate indication of what’s to come. With last year’s return to normal at 100% operating capacity and this year expected to be the same, racing fans are already looking forward to the start of the season.
“We’re looking forward to a spectacular summer,” McKenna said. “Demand for tickets has been strong, and we’re hearing that advance reservations for hotels and restaurants is outpacing past years. This is the first year since 2019 that we’ve been able to offer typical sales opportunities.”
McKenna is confident that 2022 will bring the sort of memorable summer meet that fans of the race course have come to know and love. Of course, it’s all dependent on public health safety, which NYRA will continue to monitor and make decisions based on data received.
“NYRA is very experienced at this point at taking care of our racing fans and employees,” McKenna said. “They’ll work closely with the health departments and tell us what we need to do. Being an outdoor setting in a parklike venue, we’ve got an expansive backyard where people can spread out as much as they need to, even on our busiest days.”
With so much to look forward to for this year’s summer meet, a job at the race course could be a great opportunity to be a part of the experience, gaining valuable work experience that can benefit an employee down the road.
“The best way to get a summer job here is to come to our job fair,” McKenna commented. “It’s an incredibly exciting place to work. This is a world-class sporting venue, known around the world. It’s the center of the horseracing universe for eight weeks every year. What better way to spend the summer than at Saratoga Race Course?”
