Health officials in Bermuda confirmed today that no cases of monkeypox were detected on the island.
In providing the update, Minister of Health Kim Wilson said: “We are keeping a close eye on monkeypox and working closely with the Bermuda Hospitals Board to develop guidance for primary care providers and the MDL lab on sample handling.”
Wilson said the government is also working with Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to adequately respond to the virus.
The BHB Pharmacy is trying to secure vaccines to build local immunity against the virus.
She noted that the risk of contracting monkeypox on Bermuda remains low and its symptoms such as rash and lesions on the body are easy to spot.
“Our port health officials have been made aware of how to screen and recognize possible cases and take appropriate action. The Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ayoola Oyinloye, has advised healthcare professionals to identify and immediately isolate and report cases to local and regional health authorities,” she stated.
“If Bermuda has a reported monkeypox case, the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital has appropriate isolation facilities to support treatment.”
Over 90 cases of monkey pox have been detected across Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia.
The WHO said reported cases thus far have no established travel links to West Africa and South Sudan where the virus is endemic.
