Bermuda: Govt warns of harsh punishment as police probe latest murder | Loop Caribbean News - Loop News Caribbean

National Security Minister, Michael Weeks, has warned that the authorities may be forced to implement harsh measures similar to what obtained to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic here, as the island registered yet another murder.

Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a 22-year-old man earlier reported missing was found near a golf course in St George’s parish.

Police believe Keyoshe Robinson could have been lured to the spot where he died. It is thought he was shot. It was Bermuda’s fourth murder of the year.

“The Bermuda Police Service has launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a body on the shoreline, just off the 10th hole of the golf course in St George’s. Officers who had been tasked to look for a male reported missing the previous day made the sad discovery,” said

Detective Superintendent Nicholas Pedro.

Pedro, the crime division officer in charge, said detectives from the Serious Crime Unit are investigating the matter, and are scouring CCTV footage and other evidence to find his killers.

“We are of the view that Mr Robinson knew his killers, and may have been lured to the location where he met his death. We await the results of a pending forensic autopsy, but evidence from the scene points to Mr Robinson having been shot with a firearm.”

Before police identified the victim, National Security Minister Michael Weeks said “we just pray that the community comes together and helps the police solve this and other crimes in an expeditious manner.

“Once and for all we have to come out and say ‘enough is enough,” Weeks said, adding that his ministry was planning to bring together people and organisations in a “retreat” to tackle violence on the island.

“Crisis is an understatement. If I could be brutally honest, the way we approached COVID — shut things down, got tough on certain things and certain people, now it’s past the time that we have to look at what’s happening to our young black men in that same manner, with that same fervour.”

Off-duty prison officer Daemon Bell, 49, died in February after being attacked while trying to break up a fight between two men.

April saw two murders in the space of two days. Che Jennings, 24, was gunned down outside Warwick Workmen’s Club after Laje Franklin, 18, was shot and killed near Clearwater Beach in St David’s.

His body was found by a member of the public out for exercise early the following morning.
