A matchup between USC and Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game game was predicted in the league's preseason media poll, but no one could have envisioned the circumstances that are bringing the meeting to fruition. The No. 13 Trojans (5-0) are facing Oregon (3-2) only because Washington (3-1) cannot represent the Pac-12 North in the game due to COVID-19 issues. USC, meanwhile, could just as easily be 2-3 after needing last-minute heroics in three of its five victories this season. So while neither team has much of a shot at making the College Football Playoff, both should feel fortunate to be playing for the conference title.
Though consecutive losses to Oregon State and Cal put a damper on Oregon's season, this is still a critical moment in third-year coach Mario Cristobal's tenure. The Ducks' roster is 73.6% underclassmen, which is the highest percentage in the FBS, according to the school. Hoisting a conference championship trophy with such a young roster would be a nice accomplishment for Cristobal, who just signed a contract extension. But USC has its eyes on the program's first 6-0 start since 2006 despite Clay Helton being an embattled coach at the start of the year. This Trojans team has a potentially explosive offense and has proven to have a knack for winning close games this season.
