HOPE, Ark. — Starting in January, the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana will offer a new entrepreneurial leadership course that is meant to help students interested in business adjust to the economic challenges that come with the pandemic.
The course was designed and is taught by Hope native and adjunct instructor George Smith, along with business instructor Edward Lamb.
Smith is a former newspaper editor and publisher of newspapers in four states, former corporate communications executive for two Fortune 500 companies, and former director of global communications for a Japan-based global positioning systems company.
His course is geared towards business owners and employees who see a need to increase revenue and expand their services, as well as those who work for an existing business and would like to look at ways to seek promotion opportunities.
Smith said he will attempt to portray life lessons from the business world and what he's learned from them, relaying that information to his students.
"Teaching certain business courses out of a book just doesn't work, so I try to teach it from a practical standpoint," Smith said. "This is the situation. How would you handle it? And let people think it through. Then, we'll talk about the different scenarios, so when they go out in life and something happens, it will trigger something that we talked about."
He said learning not only from successes, but from failures in business, is the key to future success.
"I've started two businesses in my life — neither one of which worked," he said. "So, part of the course is saying "you may have a great idea, but how is it going to translate into the real world?' I use my two failures as examples of good ideas where the timing or finances just weren't right."
Smith said the timing of this course is key, as national economists are predicting that beginning in 2021, start-up businesses aimed at specific areas of the consumer-centric marketplace will be in high demand.
"I believe the course right now is so timely with the pandemic because we are not going to have a new normal for a long time," he said. "I'm not sure it's ever going to come back to normal, due to the fact that we're in the habit of ordering everything online and having it delivered. So, what businesses are out there that are creating a niche that people cannot pass up? And that's where I'll push the class."
The Entrepreneurial Leadership class is available in-person on the Hope campus and via distance learning at the Texarkana campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2:15 p.m.
