Kentucky vs. Notre Dame score, takeaways: Wildcats lose fourth straight as comeback try falls short vs. Irish - CBSSports.com

Kentucky's bid for an historic comeback win fell short Saturday at home against Notre Dame as the Wildcats lost 64-63 after a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds from Olivier Sarr clanged off the rim. A tip-in from Devin Askew off Sarr's miss came just after the final horn sounded as the Wildcats lost their fourth consecutive game.

It's incredible Kentucky was even in a position to win it given how poorly it started the game. It trailed by as many as 24 points in the first half and by 22 at halftime before coming to life in the final frame. Kentucky finally started making shots in the second half and held Notre Dame to zero points during an 8-minute stretch to narrow the gap, during which it went on a 16-0 run. But Kentucky never led in the second half despite its opportunities late.

"I wanted it to look different, and boy it did in the first half, didn't it?" Calipari said after the game, referring to hope for changes in the game after UK entered on a three-game losing streak. "One guy broke down four times and gave them four wide-open 3s, and they made them. And I told them at halftime it would be a 10, 9-point game. And now, second half, we don't have those breakdowns, we don't give them those, we pick up and we're the aggressor, and we fight. The guys that didn't fight I took out of the game."

The loss drops Kentucky to 1-4 overall, its worst start to a season since 1984-1985, and compounds what was already the worst start to a season for Kentucky under Calipari. It's also the program's first four-game losing streak since 2018, when it dropped four-straight in SEC play, and marks just the third time under Calipari that his Cats have fallen in four consecutive contests. But the final 20 minutes -- where Kentucky outscored Notre Dame 37-16 -- at the very least gave Calipari optimism that better days are ahead.

"If that's who we are those last 20 minutes, there's hope," he said.

The schedule for Kentucky won't lighten up anytime soon, though. It faces UCLA in the CBS Sports Classic next week on a neutral court before facing in-state rival Louisville the day after Christmas on the Cardinals' home court. The rivalry game is the final nonconference test before SEC play begins.
