Sophomore Diamond Miller contributed 19 points and four rebounds, followed by senior Chloe Bibby, who earned a double-double with 15 points 11 rebounds.
The Terrapins shot 60% from the three-point arc in the second half and sunk 22 of 31 free throws for the game.
"We looked a little rusty from our 10 days of not having played a game, but I was proud of our players really staying the course," said head coach Brenda Frese. "It was a game of runs and both teams made a lot of different plays but I couldn't be more proud of this team."
"We know how hard Rutgers plays against us and really any opponent in the Big Ten. Road wins are precious. I thought we had great poise and composure, it was a great game down the stretch and I really thought between Chloe and Mimi there were significant contributions that we just had to have."
Collins and Bibby combined for 18 of Maryland's 37 rebounds and a total of 37 points.
Rutgers and Maryland were neck and neck through the first half ending the first two quarters at 42 points apiece.
The Terps came out in the third quarter on a 9-0 run, giving them separation with a 51-42 lead. Rutgers quickly rallied with a run of its own bringing the score back to 53-51.
The two teams were tied at the end of the third quarter in another deadlock at 63.
Senior Channise Lewis scored back-to-back buckets to start an 11-0 run, including a pair of threes from Collins, giving the Terps a lead 78-68.
Rutgers last-minute rally came up short with just five seconds on the clock after tthe Scarlet Knights had cut the lead to just 2 points. A pair of made free throws by Lewis would eventually seal the score giving Maryland their first conference victory of the season.
Rutgers' Guirantes led all players in scoring with 33 points.
Maryland owns the series over Rutgers, 28-12 and has won nine of 10 meetings since joining the league in the 2014-15 season.
