The marquee matchup of college basketball's opening week is upon us. No. 8 Michigan State travels to take on No. 6 Duke on Tuesday in a battle of the bluebloods that will serve as the first game of the Champions Classic.
"It's going to be a hell of a matchup, and maybe one of the better games on paper," MSU coach Tom Izzo said this week.
The Spartans are 2-0 after double-digit wins over Eastern Michigan and Notre Dame to open their season. The Blue Devils are 1-0 after a convincing home win Saturday over Coppin State. Both teams, though, present vastly different challenges to the other, a stylistic clash that sets up for a fascinating Xs and Os battle between two Hall of Fame coaches.
Michigan State is replacing its top two scorers from last season including All-American guard Cassius Winston, and it is doing so with a cast of familiar characters. Duke finds itself in a similar boat as Coach K tries to replace All-American big man Vernon Carey Jr. and ACC Player of the Year Tre Jones with a roster that has the least amount of returning experience among all ACC teams.
