CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — For years, a professor of history at Finger Lakes Community College has taught students how pandemics shape human history.
But now the course will be returning this spring as we currently live through a pandemic for the history books.
"It’s always a question of when, not if," that’s what Dr. Robert Brown always tells his students of the next pandemic, in his course 'The Black Death and Beyond: How Disease Has Changed History.'
It's a lesson former student Jillian Duprey-Schommer remembers well.
"He said it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when another pandemic will strike," Duprey-Schommer said. "And I was like, oh no, I probably won’t be alive by then. But a few years later, and here we are."
Dr. Brown says we can learn a lot from the history of past pandemics.
"It is a useful set of examples that we can apply in the present to help us navigate through current crisis like this one," Dr. Brown said.
He says we have many advantages that didn’t exist in the past, but that has made us careless.
"We have sort of had the benefit of growing up in a fairly disease-free environment, and so when COVID came along it threw many people for a loop," Dr. Brown said.
And that was a lesson a fellow professor, Jim Lyon, who audited the course took away.
"Just the importance of being careful, observing the protocols for wearing a mask, washing your hands, keeping your distance," Lyon said.
Having taken his course, Jillian can’t help but wonder what will one day be said about COVID-19.
"It’s interesting to think about how this pandemic will affect human history," Duprey-Schommer said.
Dr. Brown’s class returns at FLCC in spring 2021.
