Every game is important when you're the No. 3 team in the country, but this one has slightly more significance for Clemson after the ACC decided to alter its 2020 schedule. It's the last game Clemson will have to play this regular season, and if the Tigers can get past Virginia Tech, they'll begin getting ready for the ACC Championship Game against No. 2 Notre Dame. It's a move that makes sense for the ACC. It allows both of its likely title game participants extra time to prepare for the game and increases the likelihood both teams reach the game healthy and able to play. Oh, and if it helps set up a scenario that makes it more likely both reach the College Football Playoff!
Of course, this is all under the premise that Clemson doesn't lose to Virginia Tech, which is something the Hokies probably want you to know is possible. Now, it's not likely -- as the 21.5-point spread suggests -- but Clemson probably shouldn't just show up to Lane Stadium thinking the Hokies will lay down for the good of the conference. The Hokies have a bad taste in their mouths because after getting off to a 3-1 start to the season, they've lost four of five and three in a row. While a rivalry game against Virginia awaits next week, Virginia Tech wouldn't mind shocking the world and ruining the ACC's plans first.
