Tigers use barrage of homers to beat Pirates, 11-5: Box score, game rewind - MLive.com

The Detroit Tigers hit four home runs before a single out was recorded, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-5 Saturday afternoon at PNC Park.

The Tigers (7-5) batted around twice for the second day in a row. They won 17-13 on Friday and will go for the sweep against the Pirates (3-12) on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers scored five in the first inning off Pittsburgh starter Derek Holland, getting home runs by Niko Goodrum, Miguel Cabrera, C.J. Cron and Jeimer Candelario.

It was the first time the Tigers had hit four home runs in one inning since June 1, 2013, at Baltimore, when Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta, Alex Avila and Cabrera accomplished the feat.

It was the first time they hit four home runs in the first inning since July 29, 1974, at Cleveland, when Al Kaline, Bill Freehan, Mickey Stanley and Ed Brinkman went deep.

The game was delayed in the sixth inning after Pirates first baseman Phillip Evans suffered what appeared to be a serious injury after a collision.

Evans and Pirates right fielder Gregory Polanco were chasing a pop fly in foul territory when they collided at full speed. Polanco’s elbow connected with Evans’ jaw.

Both players were dazed, but Polanco was able to get to his feet. Evans remained on the ground and was quickly attended to by medical personnel.

Evan’s neck was stabilized and he was secured to a stretcher and carted off the field. He left in an ambulance.

GAME REWIND

Bottom 9th: Kyle Funkhouser gives up a couple of singles, but the Pirates do no damage. This one’s in the books. Tigers go for the sweep on Sunday. Final: Tigers 11, Pirates 5.

Top 9th: We’ve reached the point where the Pirates backup catcher is coming in to pitch. John Ryan Murphy actually did well, pitching a 1-2-3 frame in his third MLB mound appearance. Tigers 11, Pirates 5.

Bottom 8th: New reliever Kyle Funkhouser gives up a single to Colin Moran, who entered the game to replace the injured Phillip Evans, but retired the next two batters to end the inning. Tigers 11, Pirates 5.

Top 8th: The Tigers are retired in order by Pirates reliever Yacksel Rio, who strikes out Travis Demeritte and Grayson Greiner. Tigers 11, Pirates 5.

Bottom 7th: Gregory Soto pitches a silky smooth 1-2-3 seventh inning, with two more strikeouts to add to his total. He’s allowed just one hit in 7 2/3 innings this year. Tigers 11, Pirates 5.

Top 7th: Back-to-back doubles by Miguel Cabrera and C.J. Cron give the Tigers another insurance run. Cabrera has a single, double, homer and sacrifice fly today. Tigers 11, Pirates 5.

Bottom 6th: Jose Cisnero issued a one-out walk but otherwise continued his string of solid relief appearances. Tigers 10, Pirates 5.

Top 6th: The Tigers scored four runs and batted around for the fourth time in two days in an inning that was marred by a serious injury to Pirates first baseman Phillip Evans. While chasing a foul pop down the right field line, Evans collided with right fielder Gregory Polanco. Polanco’s elbow hit Evans’ jaw and appeared to knock him out at least briefly. Evans was secured to a stretcher and left the stadium in an ambulance. Tigers 10, Pirates 5.

Bottom 5th: Ron Gardenhire stuck with Ivan Nova in the fifth and it paid off. Nova records a 1-2-3 frame, including a strikeout of Gregory Polanco. Tigers 6, Pirates 5.

Top 5th: The Tigers go quickly in the fifth, as Derek Holland strikes out Travis Demeritte and Grayson Greiner in a 1-2-3 frame. Tigers 6, Pirates 5.

Bottom 4th: The Pirates are back in the game, and Ivan Nova has no one to blame but himself. He walked three batters in the fourth and allowed a couple of soft base hits. The Pirates have climbed to within one run after a 36-pitch inning by Nova. Tigers 6, Pirates 5.

Top 4th: Miguel Cabrera reached on a one-out single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Jeimer Candelario hit a two-out shot to the warning track in center, but couldn’t get Cabrera home. Tigers 6, Pirates 2.

Bottom 3rd: The Pirates get on the board with two singles and an RBI double by Kevin Newman. Can they climb back into this one? Tigers 6, Pirates 2.

Top 3rd: The Pirates have a depleted bullpen after Friday’s 11-inning affair, so Derek Holland has done yeoman’s work just to hang other. He tossed a 1-2-3 third inning, striking out Grayson Greiner and Niko Goodrum. Tigers 6, Pirates 0.

Bottom 2nd: Ivan Nova gets three ground-ball outs on just five pitches in a breezy second inning of work. This is how it’s done. Tigers 6, Pirates 0.

Top 2nd: The Tigers tacked on another run, this time using three singles. Jonathan Schoop, Jeimer Candelario and Travis Demeritte all had base hits off Derek Holland, who is taking one for the team right now. Tigers 6, Pirates 0.

Bottom 1st: Kevin Newman reached on an infield single but the Tigers starter Ivan Nova struck out Gregory Polanco to end the inning. Tigers 5, Pirates 0.

Top 1st: What a start! Four of the Tigers first five batters homered in a miserable 11-pitch span for Pirates starter Derek Holland. Niko Goodrum, Miguel Cabrera, C.J. Cron and Jeimer Candelario went long for the Tigers, who staked Ivan Nova to a nice cushion. Tigers 5, Pirates 0.
