The owner of a Central Pennsylvania golf course that was the focus of a widespread furor two years ago has failed to reply to a federal racial and sexual discrimination lawsuit filed by a group of Black women golfers.

The failure by Brew Vino LLC, owner of the Grandview Golf Course in York County to answer the suit filed by Myneca Ojo and Karen Crosby resulted in a default judgment being filed against the firm in U.S. Middle District Court in Harrisburg on Monday.

That means the next step in the case is a determination of monetary damages. Ojo of Hanover and Crosby of York sought unspecified financial damages when they filed their suit in April.

They lodged their complaint two years after police were called on them as they played on the course on April 21, 2018.

The women claim Steve Chronister, a former York County commissioner and a course official, approached them on the second hole and told them they were golfing too slowly. Chronister told the women, who denied tying up play, that he would refund their fees for their club memberships and carts, Ojo and Crosby contend.

They claim that when they protested Chronister called 911 for the Northern York County Regional Police. An officer responded, but Chronister called her off before she talked to the female golfers, the suit states.

Later, on the back nine, another course official falsely accused them of cutting in front of other golfers, the women say. An argument ensued between club officials and Oja and fellow player Sandra Thompson, an unsuccessful candidate in the 2019 race for county judge. The women say they refused to accept refund checks for their club memberships and Chronister again called the cops.

Ojo and Crosby claim they were targeted because of their race and gender.

Chronister, a former county commissioner who lost a re-election bid last year, denied any discrimination was involved and said he was just trying to ensure smooth play. The course issued an apology to the women.

Court records show no attorney even entered an appearance to defend Brew Vino against the Ojo/Crosby suit.

Two other women who were involved in the incidents on the course, Sandra Harrison and Carolyn Dow, filed a separate discrimination lawsuit against Brew Vino in April as well. The course owner hasn’t replied to that federal complaint, either and Harrison and Dow also are seeking a default judgment.
