Tigers lose 20th straight game to Indians: Box score, game rewind - MLive.com

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers may have made strides this season, but they still can’t overcome one curse of 2019: Their inability to beat the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians beat the Tigers 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park to complete a three-game series sweep. Cleveland has now beaten the Indians in 20 consecutive games dating to last April.

The Tigers (9-10) have lost five in a row. They will play the Indians (13-9) again in Cleveland in just five days.

The MLB record for the longest winning streak over one team is 23 games, set by the Baltimore Orioles over the Kansas City Royals in 1969-1970. The Indians will have a chance to tie that mark next weekend.

Tigers starter Michael Fulmer failed to escape the third, giving up three runs on five hits, including two home runs. Reliever John Schreiber coughed up three runs in the sixth, the first time he’s a allowed a run to cross the plate all season.

Indians designated hitter Franmil Reyes had two home runs, including a 453-foot shot that hit above the second level of shrubbery in center field.

Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected in the third inning for arguing the umpires’ decision to call a ground-rule double third inning. Pinch-hitter Cameron Maybin was ejected in the fifth for arguing balls and strikes.

Shortstop Niko Goodrum left the game in the fourth inning with upper back tightness.

Maybin was ejected between innings, although it wasn’t clear why. Tigers 4, Indians 4.

Bottom 3rd: The Tigers tie things up with a barrage of hard-hit balls: A double by Grayson Greiner, an RBI single by Niko Goodrum, a double by Harold Castro and finally a two-run single by Miguel Cabrera, who had been in a 1-for-19 skid. The Tigers very nearly tied it up on what appeared to be an RBI triple by Jeimer Candelario, but the play was ruled a ground-rule double by umpires after the ball appeared to get lodged in the space between the wall’s padding and the dirt. Cabrera was returned to third base, where he was stranded by reliever Phil Maton. Tigers 3, Indians 3.

Tigers’ Ron Gardenhire ejected for arguing ground-rule call

Bottom 1st: Harold Castro singled, but Adam Plutko struck out Jonathan Schoop to end a scoreless first. Tigers 0, Indians 0.

Top 1st: Michael Fulmer is once again touching 96 mph. He gave up a two-out double to Francisco Lindor but Carlos Santana’s first-pitch lineout ended the inning. Indians 0, Tigers 0.
