DETROIT -- Starting pitcher Matthew Boyd gave up seven runs and the Detroit Tigers couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities late in a 7-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park.
The White Sox (10-9) took two of three from the Tigers (9-7), who are off on Thursday before starting a weekend series with the Cleveland Indians.
Boyd gave up back-to-back home runs to open the game, including a lead-off shot by Tim Anderson.
Anderson finished the day with four hits, including the the homer, a triple and two singles.
The White Sox scored four against Boyd in the fifth, punctuated by Luis Robert’s three-run double.
Boyd, the Tigers’ No. 1 starter, has posted a 10.24 ERA in four starts this year, failing to make it beyond the fifth inning in each of them.
Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop hit a solo home run in the first, and the Tigers added four unearned runs off White Sox starter Dylan Cease in the fourth, including a two-run home run by Tigers third baseman Willi Castro in his first game of 2020.
Castro went 3-for-4 with two singles in addition to the homer.
GAME REWIND
Bottom 9th: The Tigers go quietly in the ninth against Sox closer Alex Colome. Final: White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Top 9th: Gregory Soto allowed a walk and a single, but struck out three White Sox for yet another scoreless inning. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Bottom 8th: Christin Stewart draws a lead-off walk, but Evan Marshall retires the next three batters. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Top 8th: A 1-2-3 inning for Tigers reliever Jose Cisnero, who struck out two, including Tim Anderson, who had been 4-for-4 entering the at-bat. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Bottom 7th: A missed opportunity for the Tigers, who bring the go-ahead run to the plate after singles by Willi Castro and Jonathan Schoop. But Miguel Cabrera grounds out against reliever Evan Marshall to end the threat. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Top 7th: Tigers reliever Bryan Garcia gave up a single to ex-Tiger and current Tiger-killer James McCann but didn’t allow a run. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Bottom 6th: Dylan Cease retires the Tigers with three quick groundouts and is very likely done for the day after giving up just one earned run. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Top 6th: Tigers reliever John Schreiber pitched a scoreless sixth. He has now pitched seven scoreless innings to start the season. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Bottom 5th: Miguel Cabrera reached on an infield single but was eliminated in a double play. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Top 5th: The White Sox answered right back with four runs against Matthew Boyd in his final inning of work. Luis Robert had the killer blow, a three-run double that was a few feet away from being a grand slam. White Sox 7, Tigers 5.
Bottom 4th: The Tigers score four runs thanks to some unexpected contributions from the bottom of the lineup. After Jeimer Candelario doubled down the line in right, Victor Reyes reached base on a passed ball after a strikeout. (White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease and catcher James McCann were crossed up on the play). Grayson Greiner got his first hit of the season, hitting a two-out, two-run double to the gap in right center. Then Willi Castro followed with a 404-foot homer to the seats in right. Tigers 5, White Sox 3.
Top 4th: Matthew Boyd walks two batters and gives up a loud, 400-foot flyout to Luis Robert, but escapes unscathed. White Sox 3, Tigers 1.
Bottom 3rd: A lead-off single by Willi Castro -- in his first at-bat of 2020 -- went nowhere as Dylan Cease retired the next three batters. White Sox 3, Tigers 1.
Top 3rd: Tim Anderson hit a ball down the left-field line into the corner, where it appeared to become wedged under the fencing. Left fielder Christin Stewart struggled to dig it out; in retrospect, he should have thrown up his hands and asked for a ground-rule double. But Anderson reached third and scored on a groundout. White Sox 3, Tigers 1.
Bottom 2nd: Harold Castro legged out a hustle double on a hit left field but he was stranded at second base. White Sox 2, Tigers 1.
Top 2nd: Perhaps Boyd has settled in after that rough start. He retired the White Sox in order in the second, getting Nomar Mazara swinging for his third K of the game. White Sox 2, Tigers 1.
Bottom 1st: Jonathan Schoop hit a 433-foot blast to the shrubbery in right-center off White Sox starter Dylan Cease. It was his fourth homer of the year. White Sox 2, Tigers 1.
Top 1st: A rough start for Matthew Boyd, who surrenders back-to-back home runs to Tim Anderson and Eloy Jimenez. He recovers to strike out Jose Abreu and Edwin Encarnacion and escapes the inning without further damage. White Sox 2, Tigers 0.
