LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Universities in La Crosse are temporarily no longer requiring students to submit ACT or SAT scores for admission.

The UW System’s Board of Regents passed a plan waiving requirements for scoring submissions at most schools in the system.

While UW-La Crosse is a part of the system, Viterbo University is not. But both colleges are figuring out next steps for the future.

“It wouldn’t really be fair to say that everybody has to submit those scores because their could be students who didn’t have the opportunity to take the tests,” UWL chancellor Joe Gow said.

Gow says prior to the board’s decision, the campus was going to continue requiring students’ test scores.

But the university changed course on those requirements after the regents made up their minds.

“We won’t be doing that for the fall or the fall of next year,” Gow said.

Gow says he doesn’t think the board’s decision will negatively impact student admission.

“It will create additional work for our admissions staff to do,” Gow said. “Now the main thing, of course, remains the student’s high school grade-point average, the rigor of the courses that they took.”

Viterbo University already had a plan in place.

“You know once we realized a lot of these testing dates weren’t going to happen, that was kind of the nail in the coffin for requiring these test scores,” Viterbo University director of admissions Brian Weber said.

Weber says he is not sure if test score submissions will be required for 2021.

“I think we feel pretty comfortable from the admissions side being able to evaluate students for their academic readiness, their college readiness,” Weber said.

Gow says he expects UWL will require ACT or SAT scores once the pandemic ends, but he doesn’t exactly know when that will happen.

“During an emergency, that’s something that we think we should give the students some understanding on,” Gow said.

Both UWL and Viterbo are giving students the option to submit their ACT or SAT scores if they wish.

UW-Madison is the only school in the system still requiring test score submissions.

The Board of Regents approved the plan unanimously.
