Fayetteville, N.Y. — The golf course at Green Lakes State Park is tentatively scheduled to open May 15, according to state officials.
When it does happen, the same rules in place because of coronavirus at other golf courses will apply at Green Lakes. That means no golf carts, no club house and no food. Instead, golfers are asked to prepay and walk the course. And all social distancing measures — including wearing face masks — must be followed. (See below.)
Course conditions will determine the opening date, according to Dan Keefe, a spokesman for the state’s parks office. Across New York, state-run golf courses began opening April 25. Already some on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley are open.
Battle Island in Fulton is opening Wednesday, May 13, according to Keefe.
Other areas at Green Lakes remain open. The camping and pavilion areas are closed through at least May 31.
All swimming areas at all state parks are also closed through May 31.
Here’s more information from the state’s parks office and the Department of Environmental Conversation on how to enjoy state parks during the pandemic:
"State Parks, Forest Preserve lands, and State Forests are open to provide New Yorkers with healthy way to stay active, spend time with immediate household family members, and reduce stress and anxiety while practicing physical distancing. State parks and state lands are seeing a high volume of visitors. However, with social distancing protocols in place, State parks and state lands have plenty of room for people to spread out when they arrive.
DEC Forest Rangers continue to patrol Forest Preserve lands, State Forests, and other DEC managed lands, and educate hikers and other recreationists about proper social distancing practices. State Park Police officers are actively patrolling State Parks. State Park Police, Forest Rangers and DEC Environmental Conservation Police Officers have observed a range of compliance with social distancing guidelines depending on the location and groups with most people in most locations following good social distancing practices. When non-compliant behavior is observed, Park Police, Forest Rangers and ECOs educate the people about proper social distancing practices and the importance of following the guidelines for visiting the outdoors.
Social distancing:
State parks operations staff are assigned to manage the visitors as they arrive and disperse them into the park to give people an opportunity to recreate safely.
Signage is posted to remind the visitors to keep visits short, stay apart and move quickly through crowded areas.
Regular social media posts and website alerts encourage people to recreate locally and responsibly.
Parking:
Parking capacity has been reduced by up to 50% at many popular state parks. Parks are closed to incoming traffic as they reach capacity limits.
Visitors who arrive at a park where crowds are forming should choose a different park, a different trail, or return another time/day to visit;
If parking lots are full, please do not park along roadsides or other undesignated areas. To protect your safety and that of others, please choose a different area to visit, or return another time or day when parking is available.
Illegally parked vehicles will be ticketed and may be towed.
Facemasks:
Signage is posted at state parks to remind visitors to wear a face covering. Face masks must be worn when unable to maintain safe social distance, including outdoors. Park visitors/hikers should wear a face covering when they may be near other park visitors and staff, including parking lots, when passing other on trails, or near park buildings/restrooms.
Covid-related restrictions/closures:
- All state park playgrounds, athletic courts, and sporting fields are closed.
- All campsite, cabin, and pavilion/shelter reservations are canceled through May 31.All visitors will be issued a full refund. All new camping and pavilion/shelter reservations for the 2020 season have been suspended until further notice. For more information, visit https://parks.ny.gov/camping/
