With this spring’s Algebra I end-of-course exam canceled, Florida Education Department officials looked for a way to give non-seniors taking the course another way to still meet their math graduation requirement without having to wait for months to take the algebra test.
They settled on adding the geometry end-of-course exam, which comes at the end of the subject that most teens take a year after algebra, as a substitute.
Other options include achieving a concordant score on the SAT, ACT or PSAT.
But just saying they wanted to include the geometry score wouldn’t make it so. They have to adopt specific rules allowing that to happen.
Now that rule is in draft form, ready for a May 20 webinar where interested parties can learn more details and offer input. And notably, the test that had been recommended for deletion is suggested to become a permanent alternative to the algebra exam for all students who enter high school after 2018-19 — not just for those who took algebra this school year.
The proposal would set an acceptable passing score of 499 or higher as acceptable toward the diploma requirement. Students can score up to 575 on the exam. It also would set a slightly lower score for those students who were subject to past standards and still remain in high school.
