Coach optimistic as Camperdown depart for Bermuda Classics

Nyron Hurd's optimism is high as his Camperdown High School team looks to depart the island today for Bermuda to participate in a Thanksgiving Basketball Classic, to be held in the British territory situated in the North Atlantic Ocean from November 22-25.

Camperdown will be making their debut at the annual tournament which comprises four Under-19 high school male teams.

Along with hosts Bermuda and Camperdown, two teams from the United States of America (USA) are also to feature at the Classic scheduled to take place at Berkeley Gym.

Hurd is expecting a good showing from his players, which includes three members from their reigning Urban High Schools Under-16 championship team. They are Anton Mason, Khaleel Lynch and Jermaine Tulloch. They will, however, be without the services of Ramone Spence, who is currently the top scorer and top three-point shooter in Camperdown's Under-19 team so far this season.

“The players were named long before now and he was not included in the contingent that will be leaving for Bermuda. But even though this is an Under-19 tournament we have included three Under-16 players in the squad for them to gain some experience. The competition should be a very good experience for the players, and it is also very good to see how the other countries operate, along with the strategies they use in basketball.

“The size of the American players should be another important factor, as they tend to be much bigger in size and more taller in height, so they should have the advantage over us. But despite that, we are going out to give it our best shot,” said Hurd.

The Windward Road-based Camperdown, who are last year's beaten finalists, are currently undefeated in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Urban High Under-19 championships, and should easily advance to the quarter-finals upon their return.

Camperdown defeated former champions Calabar 70-67 in their first meeting and were leading 34-29 inside the third quarter of the return game that was stopped due to fading light at the Calabar High School court, on Monday. That game has been rescheduled for November 27.

As such, the Camperdown team will have two games in hand against Jamaica College and Calabar when they return.
