NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Organizers of the Newport-Bermuda Race said that one crew had to abandon their ship after it began taking on water early Sunday morning.
Around 3 a.m. crew members of Alliance USA 52770 reported that their ship was taking on water.
The crew decided to abandon ship, and were all transported safely aboard fellow racing ship Ceilidh, which will continue the race with both its own and the Alliance’s crew.
The ship is expected to arrive in Bermuda on June 25.
Organizers added that all racing teams stopped racing in order to provide assistance to the Alliance crew.
