TROY alumnus Swan to take part in PGA Tour event in Bermuda - Troy Today - Troy University

Later this year, Troy University alumnus Kim Swan will celebrate his 65th birthday in style.

Swan, who was named Most Valuable Player of TROY’s 1979 team that finished fourth in the NCAA Division II Golf National Championship, will make his Butterfield Bermuda Championship tournament debut Oct. 27-30 at the Port Royal Golf Course. Swan accepted a sponsor exemption for the PGA Tour event at the course where he served as a teaching pro up until last year and where he serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees.

“This special opportunity comes as I celebrate my 65th Birthday at Port Royal Golf Course, which I proudly serve as chairman of the Board of Trustees, as it enters its 53rd year of operation as a public golf course,” Swan said. “As a senior citizen I’ve made a concerted effort to embrace a more healthier fitness-focused lifestyle; with this opportunity I aim to turn back the clock for one last dance in honor of all those who helped along my life’s journey and lift up the Port Royal Golf Course for the great public golf course it remains today.”

Swan graduated from TROY in 1980 and went on to a professional golf career on the PGA’s European Tour, becoming the first Bermudian to compete on the European Tour. He is an honorary member and former President of the Bermuda Professional Golfers Association and a much sought-after golf coach who regularly writes articles for local and international golf publications. As a golf manager, Swan presided over the St. George’s Golf Club and Ocean View Golf Course in varying capacities until 2001. He owned a golf management company which managed golf operations, golf tournaments and promoted Bermuda tourism overseas.

Swan has an impressive record of public service as a Senator for nine years and as a Member of the Bermudan Parliament. He previously served as a Member of Parliament in St. George’s West from 2007 until 2012. He served on numerous government boards including: former Chairman of the Road Safety Council, Police Complaints Authority, Immigration Board and the St. George’s Golf Course Advisory Committee. As a member of the Bermuda branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), he represented Bermuda at several conferences in Bermuda, the Caribbean and Tanzania.
