Clemson, S.C—Clemson returns to the course on Monday, March 7 at one of the most famous venues in the sport. Jordan Byrd’s team will compete in the Wake Forest Invitational March 7-8 at the famed Pinehurst #2 in Pinehurst, NC. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
Pinehurst #2 was designed in 1907 by the legendary Donald Ross, one of 400 courses he designed throughout the United States. However, it was the only one of his courses where he lived.
It has been the site of the 1999, 2005 and 2014 United States Opens, and the 1962, 2008 and 2019 United States Amateurs. It was also the home of the 1951 Ryder Cup. It has been announced as the site of the 2024, 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047 United States Opens.
Clemson’s lineup will include three seniors, a junior and a freshman. Graduate student Kyle Cottam will be number-one in the order. The native of Knoxville, Tenn. has a 72.40 stroke average for 15 rounds so far this year. Ranked #42 in the latest PGA Tour University rankings, Cottam has five under-par rounds, including three in the 60s. He has nine career top 10 finishes, including a fifth-place at the Maui Jim to open the season.
Graduate student Colby Patton will be number-two in the Clemson lineup. The native of Fountain Inn, SC has a 72.67 stroke average this year for his 12 rounds. He finished second at the Sharkey Individual Tournament a month ago. The All-ACC performer had a solid 218 score at the Watersound Invitational in his most recent outing.
Zack Gordon is third on the Clemson team in scoring average this year with a 72.53 figure for 15 rounds. Gordon was Clemson’s top player at the Nexus Collegiate two tournaments ago when he finished sixth overall. The native of Gaffney has 54 birdies this year to rank second on the team.
Freshman Kian Rose will hold the #4 slot in the Clemson roster. The native of South Africa has a 72.80 stroke average this year, but he has finished in the top three among Clemson golfers in each of the last three events. That includes a 23rd place finish at the Golf Club of Georgia Invitational, first among Clemson golfers.
Carter Pendley rounds out the lineup for Clemson at the Wake Forest Invitational after winning a three-person playoff for the last spot. It will be his fourth tournament of the year. He has 76.56 stroke average for his previous nine rounds.
Clemson will be without its number-one player, Jacob Bridgeman, who will compete in the Mackenzie Tour Qualifying Tournament next week. Bridgeman is ranked 13th in the nation in the latest PGA Tour University rankings.
This will be the sixth tournament of the year for the Tigers. Clemson has recorded three top five finishes, including a second-place out of 14 schools at the season opening Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona.
